Since its beginnings in the 1940s, forging relationships with the community has been the hallmark of North Winnipeg Credit Union's (NWCU) way of doing things and, to a great extent, the reason for its success. It views interaction with and commitment to the community as a way of promoting the cooperative value of "people helping people".

From a historical perspective, the credit union owes its creation to community cooperatives such as North Winnipeg Cooperative and organizations like the Ukrainian Reading Association "Prosvita", as well as the Ukrainian Canadian Institute "Prosvita". NWCU was able to grow its membership because of a concerted effort to work with the Ukrainian Canadian Congress and Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral. The credit union developed a profile as a leading supporter of Ukrainian community projects and organizations, such as the Ukrainian Canadian Foundation of Taras Shevchenko (founding donor, $1,000 in 1962), the Ukrainian Academy of Arts & Sciences (UVAN) in Canada, Plast Ukrainian Youth Association of Manitoba, the Ukrainian language Encyclopedia of Ukraine project (Sarcelles), the Civil Liberties Commission of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress and many others.

Being committed to playing a leadership role in the community and in the spirit of promoting cooperative values, North Winnipeg Credit Union continues to espouse a policy of supporting, through donations and sponsorships, non-profit organizations and groups, as well as projects and events that strengthen and enhance the community. The credit union also encourages and supports youth in the pursuit of excellence in education by providing scholarships.

One of the credit union's more recent priorities is a focus on youth. To this end the credit union offers two types of scholarships. Coupled with this, is the ongoing support for Immaculate Heart of Mary School, Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral School - Ridna Shkola, Ukrainian Reading Association "Prosvita" School - Ridna Shkola, various youth organizations and dance groups.

While more recently, the focus of the credit union's financial assistance has been on local Winnipeg community groups. NWCU continues to provide support on a regular basis to national organizations such as the Ukrainian Canadian Congress and the Ukrainian Canadian Foundation of Taras Shevchenko.

Social responsibility and good corporate citizenship is a tradition at North Winnipeg Credit Union. It is a tradition that is mutually beneficial to the credit union and the community. This credit union can be described as a "caring company", one that by definition of the Canadian Centre for Philanthropy demonstrates its good corporate citizenship by making a commitment to donate a minimum of 1% of average domestic pre-tax profits to charitable organizations. North Winnipeg Credit Union has continuously outperformed this measure.
